Drug Crimes, Substance Abuse Misdemeanor for possession

I received a ticket for possession of marijuana and have to appear in court next month. I was not arrested. This is my first run in with police, my record is spotless with not even anything like a parking ticket. I just want to know what could happen. I'm don't want to think about jail, but I know it's a possibility. Oh, and it was in Tippecanoe County in Lafayette

Jail won't happen.
Contact an attorney. It is very possible you can coco away from it without a conviction. Expect to pay some fees and attend some classes.
Don't do anything without legal counsel.

Yes, you were essentially arrested. A criminal appearance ticket is basically the same thing, except that you were released at the scene instead of spending a few hours in detention.
