How does a person sue a lawn mower company in small claims court in their home town? If the manufacturer home office is in another state.

Check your small claims rules. You might be able to serve by certified mail to the corporate executives.
However, many companies have statutory or registered agents in states other than their home states. These agents are appointed so that lawsuits may be served on them with the same resulting notice that direct service would entail.
You can look up the agents on the Secretary of State's website.
For example, Black & Decker (corporate office in Maryland) has a registered agent in Indiana for that purpose:

Use the search feature and look up the company you want to sue and see if it has an Indiana registered agent:

If the company is not listed and has no statutory agent you may also serve the lawsuit on the Secretary of State under Rule 4.10:
