We forgot a back on the street and we roperted it stolen to the police. We said it was stolen so we could get money from our insurance company. We told the police where it was stolen but as it turned out the police had surveillance in the street where we forgot it. we regret and now we just want the case deleted. We havent reported anything to the insurance company, but we are afraid to get convicted for lying. What shall we do?

it was a shopping bag, not "back"

Telling lies will not result in a criminal offense.

Unless the police contact you about this "incident", it might be wise to "forget" it.

Yes it can- but this is such small potatoes I doubt anyone would pursue it. Knowingly making such a false report is a crime, and then if you make a false insurance claim on top of that then there is an act of fraud.

The OP indicated that they did NOT follow through with the insurance filing.

Lying is not a crime in any of the 50 US states.

If lying was criminalized, there wouldn't be enough room to house the guilty, the police included!

Lying under oath, now that is another matter, as former president Bill Clinton discovered.

However, a lie told under oath isn't a lie; its called PERJURY.

In NY state, Filing a false report is a very low level misdemeanor that could possibly result with a one year jail sentence and a fine of not more than $1000, if one is convicted of the charge. That remedy, however, is rarely pursued.

Lying isn't a crime- but knowingly making a false report of a crime to the police is a crime. Here in California it is PC 148.5, a misdemeanor.
