I work for a major retail chain and have concerns over some of our LP's procedures. They are always apprehending the "shoplifter" in the store by one of the doors but in the store. Which I thought was unusual because they hadn't left the store yet. They (LP), monitor the "shoplifter" and witness the theft but violently apprehend them. To the point one "shoplifters" head was banged into a wall creating a hole in the dry wall when the two LP's were bringing the shoplifter into their office. On another occasion, which happened as recently as Easter Sunday. This "shoplifter" left a pool of blood and a trail of blood in the store and had enlarged blood blister on his head. I have never heard them identify themselves but in all honesty I am not always around when this happens. In my opinion it is like they feel they are above the law. I mean, law enforcement officers can't even do this.

I am a Retail Theft consultant and answer questions like yours daily. I also aid in training LP's Since theft laws vary by state its hard to address your door concerns. However suffice it to say that if the subject passes the last point of sale a detainment can be made. The use of force varies by retailer but it should only be enough to detain (not harm) subject. If you have concerns alert your Store Manager or HR (alertline if you have one)

The reality is that the LPs are doing exactly what your employer is condoning or they would be canned for doing it.

You can make waves about it if you don't mind losing your job.

Otherwise, keep your head down and your mouth shut.

Only partially true. I helped take down a Loss Prevention Team that were engaging in numerous violent stops. The store permit "hands on" but not gang tackling and pummeling shoplifters. We can assume Store manager was either in the dark or condoning it. However I worked with Corporate and the LP team was either fired or retrained and the LPM let go. Depending on evidence I collected and each ones involvement. So its very likely that this is not ok but LPM and/or Store Manager ar permitting it. However if you do contact corporate you could still be let go and even if not once word gets out she may not find yourself a very welcome person to be around.
