lawsuit for injuries due to domestic violence

hiya

long story short, i ended up with a stalker after a few dates. six months later or so the person forced their way into my house and attacked me, resulting in a broken bone that necessitated surgery. the criminal trial (felony strike and several misdemeanors) begins in a couple of weeks. how do i go about finding a civil attorney to take action against this person with? would it be wise to serve the assailant with papers just before the criminal trial? what can i sue for?
