Law for driving without a valid driver's license

My friend did something pretty stupid - she drove us to an event without a valid driver's license. It was quite scary for the rest of us because we had no idea that she didn't have a valid driver's license and that her license expired 6 months ago! She said that she sent in a renewal but it never came back and she just forgot about it. Maybe she is telling the truth but I still think it is very irresponsible. What are the penalties in New York for driving with an expired driver's license? I will probably need to drive all of us from now on and figure out how to get myself as an insured driver on the car. Crazy.

Traffic infractions can carry a penalty of up to 15 days in jail. Realistically though she won't get jail time.

The maximum fine is $300 plus a state surcharge which depends upon whether it is a city or town/village court. The surcharge would be either $88 or $93 if I remember correctly.
