Joint Accounts

Five years ago I was contacted by a furniture store employee in Lousiana (I'm in TN) about a credit application my son was applying for. I gave the person some personal info, call me dumb, but I never was told nor did I assume that I would become the "joint account owner". I never received anything to sign and was basically unaware of joint account involvement till a year ago. Now my son's poor credit is affecting me and I've been told that I can't be removed from this account because of the outstanding debt and that I'm just as liable. Since I never signed any paperwork, I've never purchased anything, am I responsible for any part of this debt?
