Job Liability

I live in South Carolina and would like to start in home care giving for income. I have experience and training but no certification except for "Respite Care" which was a volunteer position. I don't know much about liability but I know that people who do this are usually bonded and insured. Some I've heard even carry Malpractise insurance. I'm only talking about making $100-200 per week. If an accident occured while I was on duty (whether it was my fault or not) could I be sued for everything I own? Any suggestions on how to protect my self affordably? Thanx
