There is a big debate regarding MIDI files. They are commonly used and people play songs at gigs without paying the recording artists royalties too, e.g. charging the Girl Scouts of America for singing songs at campfires. This is a choice people make about the letter of the law and whether it will be enforced against individuals. If you're using copyrighted music for a project, whatever the form, you might have a copyright issue.
