Is a rumor of a divorce slander?

In the course of conversation over a neighbors impending and publicly noticed foreclosure, the question of a divorce came up to which I am being blamed but definitly did not acknowledge. My question: with 50% of all couples being divorced in the US does it meet the terms of slander. I do not see any opinion as to character or reputation at risk.
