My husband's accountant filed taxes for him for 2004, 2005 & 2006. The IRS showed up at my door and said that I was 50% responsible for the debt which was aquired before I married him in August of 2007. They said they could put a lien on my house that I have had for 7 years previous to getting married. Can I be held 50% responsible for a tax debt that was incurred before I married him. All of my taxes have always been filed on time and are current.

It is extremely unusual for the IRS to "show up at your door." I would suggest retaining an attorney to contact them. You also need to take the necessary steps to maintain the house as separate property. The attorney can help you with that.

If you are correct that the debt was incurred on the returns without your name and signature, you're not responsible but the IRS can touch joint property owned by both of you.
