I sold Car... got Impounded... Auctioned...coming after me for the balance...HELP

I sold my car to someone and gave the title to him. He paid cash. I sent in my copy of the DMV. They must of never recieved it and a few years later got a letter in the mail saying my car was getting auctioned off to pay for the impound fee's. I was shocked. I didn't want it back so I let it get auctioned off. Now I have a Creditor coming after me for the balance of the impound fee's. The new owner got pulled over and didn't have a valid license at that time, Thats why it got impounded. So there is a police record. What can I do???? HELP

Did you have a bill of sale?

I did. I then sent it in to the DMV like it said on the back. It didn't state to send it certified...it just said to mail it to the DMV.

Did you at least keep a copy of the bill of sale? Or maybe a deposit slip showing that the proceeds were from the sale of the car?

No....(I know) The cash I got for the car went to buying the next car.
