FORT HOOD, TX — Fort Hood is preparing to construct a memorial gate in honor of Spc. Vanessa Guillen.

On Tuesday, Fort Hood leadership invited the Guillen family to visit Fort Hood to discuss and review design concepts as well as survey a proposed site for the gate.

The Guillen family attorney Natalie Khawam announced the gate will be located on Rancier Avenue. Across the street from the gate will be a memorial site, which will be open to the public.

Lt. Gen. Pat White, III Corps and Fort Hood Commanding General, said the gate leads to the 3rd Cavalry Regiment, where Spc. Guillen served. The gate is accessed by "thousands of soldiers, civilians and families every day."

Khawam said the family was told that if soldiers follow a straight line from the gate, it leads to Spc. Guillen's barracks.

Lt. Gen. White said the gate will serve as a reminder "to take care of each other and inspire the next generation of soldiers and the surrounding community."
