okay, about a month ago i was attacked by my mothers husband, he did this when i stepped in to prevent him from hitting my then 9-year-old brother. the police were called and i filed a statement, etc. i chose not to press charges or anything like that. i did get an order of protection, as did he (after me). but then i cancelled it because he can afford a lawyer and he got one and threatened to ruin my life. recently, we both received tickets in the mail. i realize why he got one, but why did i??? i am being charged with assault and it says that i hit my step-father with my fist in the ear. yes i did do this, but it was because he was on top of me with a studded belt and pummeling me. i was trying to get him off of me and so i was kicking and hitting. he is crazy and its not the first time, but it is the first time that there is record. he did go to the hospital, playing the victim of course, and they said that i busted his eardrum, which may sound like a big deal, but i know that you can get a busted eardrum just from an ear infection. i dont know what to do. i really dont have the money to get a lawyer, but if i get charged it will definitely ruin my future...i am a college student in the education field, and i highly doubt i will get a job if i have this on my background check. this is in missouri and any information would be greatly appreciated! could there be jail time? or a fine? im 22 and a poor college student, please help!!!

Check with your college advisor if the school offers free legal assistance for students. By having the guidance of an attorney before you go to court, you can see what the chances are to have the ticket dismissed. Good Luck!
