Help needed with Landlord

This help is actually needed for my daughter & son-in-law. They really got in a mess with their landlord. They had a six month lease and now in the middle of a 18 month lease which the landlord told them they had to sign or or he would raise the rent $150 a month. The lease they have is strange. The house they live in is a single family home converted into a duplex. Their lease states that they pay 70% of the gas bill each month which they were never late (they ere only about $100 a month) and was fine since only the landlord lived upstairs. Then the landlord decided to move, He then rented the one bedroom upstairs apartment to a gentelman and his 4 kids!!!! The landlord told then they had to put the gas in their name because he as moving... well they did. :( The last two months bills have been over $500 each month. The new tenant has not paid anything in two months to the gas bill. He also has not paid rent and is being evicted. They asked the landlord to pays his tenant's portions but has refused and told them to take the new guy to court.... the problem is that they have no contract with the new guy only the landlord so they can not take him to court. They can not continue to pay this large bill each month so they asked if they could get out of the lease. The landlord said yes but must pay the next month's rent since the landlord is not recieving any money from the ne tenant and he has to pay his bills... but will not take the gas bill portion off the amount due and still insist they have to go to court after the other tenant. Should they take the landlord to court? They did not ant to do this since the landlord brags how he sc*ws his former tenants out of their deposits and they are afraid of lossing theirs.
