Hello all. I have been receiving numerous harassing telephone calls that I believe are from an ex-girlfriend. :eek: I get dozens of calls every week from a number that my caller ID says is out of area, and then the caller just hangs up after I say hello or waits a few seconds until they hear me and then they hang up. I want to put a stop to this immediately. How can I do this? I called up the telephone company but the conversation was confusing about some hotline number. Is there any information available online or here?

i have been receiving harrassing phone calls from a collsctin agency for almost 8 years. the name of the agency is MCM #1 888 305 3017

Dispute this debt in writing and send it via some certifiable method to the agency. State that it is not a valid debt in your letter. If you are still being harassed, you may be able to sue them based upon state and federal law. Don't expect a major windfall.
 
I have been receiving harassing calls for years now, my caller ID list them as either "out of area" or "private". This is a business and I cannot just let a machine take all the calls. For almost all harassing calls answered there is someone there, sometimes they hang up if you hang on the line other times they wait for you to hang up…but you can hear that the line is open. I have tried calling *65 immediately and if it does work I get something like "call cannot be found ", or the line is busy.

Did you call your local phone call for call trace? You can do that but you should keep a log of the calls and when they are received. You may have to file with the police and then they do the investigation as to the caller. I agree with the sentiment that the process should be easier, although you don't know it's the same person. Telemarketers are the worst....
 
Some of the calls I do believe are telemarketers; others are either competitor's or clients that couldn't get their way.
I would like to shove it to the telemarketers, and fine all the others.

This is an interesting topic because there is a ridiculous inconsistency -- you can harass people offline but send them spam online and Congress gets worked up into a tizzy. Part of the reason for this is that the cost of sending snail mail or making telephone calls theoretically should prevent abuse. Hopefully we'll see this issues addressed shortly as online marketers try to sell your personal information as many times as possible.
 
Call Harrassment FAQ

We are going to have a call harassment area here online and hope to include the following FAQ regarding call harassment. One can be found at http://www.privacyrights.org/fs/fs3-hrs2.htm This one happens to be tailored to California but much of the information seems to apply nationally and it is very extensive.
 
A little-known trick to get the "private" caller ID to reveal itself is the following:

  1. Establish a free toll free number (such as 800, 866, 877, 888). (Rates are now as low as 7 cents a minute.) Have the toll free number terminate on a second business line. Make sure the second business line has a Caller ID device;
  2. Call your local telephone company and ask them to reclass your main business telephone line to a RCF line (Remote Call Forwarded Line). All calls coming into your primary business line will then be redirected to your choice of a remote telephone number;
  3. When asked by your telephone company where you wish to have your listed business line terminated to . . . give them your new toll free number!
  4. Once it is installed, all of your callers dialing your primary business line will be redirected to your second business line. The callers will not hear anything different.
  5. Any telephone number with privacy block on their telephone will now show the actual telephone number on your caller ID. Why? Because you are now paying for the incoming call through your silent 800 number, and you are entitled to know what telephone number is calling you. Neat, huh?
  6. Larger companies may still only show the "Unavailable" because they do not have an individual assigned telephone number. But some will come through. But even the "Unavailable" numbers will appear on your monthly 800 statement!
  7. After a month, decide if you want to cancel the RCF feature. By then you'll know who is calling you and your cost for the month will be far less than what you think it may be. For customer calls, simply answer your telephone and offer to call them back on your other local line at no toll cost to you.[/list=1]

Great tips. I have used this by forwarding my calls to my mobile phone which also generates the caller-id information almost all of the time. Regarding the larger businesses, they are frequently on a different type of telephone system using some type of PBX (Public Branch Exchange) or other similar system where individual numbers from callers' extensions are not automatically used -- similar to the way your IP address can be different every time you call into an Internet Service Provider.
 
Personal Harrassing calls

I have a question....How many crank calls or harrassing calls does a person have to make to be prosecuted. For example: The person makes 5 or 6 phone calls and sometimes leaves messages and sometimes doesn't. :confused:
 
I don't know if there is a number of calls to be prosecuted, but I do know that the phone companies generally take these matter much more seriously than the police. I think the first thing anyone should do is contact their phone company and ask for a call trace. I don't know about NYC, but where I live the police are not going to invest much in a case involving a few calls from a ex, unless they are making threats. Even then, people usual tire of annoying you after awhile, especially if you simply ignore them. Think about it - what they hope for is to provoke a reaction. Try picking up the phone once and acting amused. Nothing like being the source of amusement to quickly dampen the motivation.
 
I missed this post!!! :) The easiest way to accomplish things is to use the call trace feature that is available -- your local telephone company will provide you with the appropriate code. Mine is *57. Here is a link:

The police won't take it as seriously unless there is an actual threat made. After the hangup, you dial the code and you write down the time that the calls were made. The telephone company will follow up on this and consider 3 calls harrassment, I believe. You will also need to press charges against the harasser after this process is completed.
 
Simmilar situation and don't know what to do?

I recently received a very disturbing phone message. A women with a private number who of course did not leave her name, left a message for my husband and using his first name. she said that his wife, and also using my first name was sleeping with her husband and calling her house and leaving messages. She said that it needs to stop because she has children. She threatened to beat me up and said that she knew where I lived. She also used a few choice word. I have not nor have I ever had an affair, but I have been very stressed from this message. I don't want my husband to ever have any doubts about me and I don't want this woman to come looking for me either. Our message only list my first name becuase I run a business from my home but our phone number is listed with both of our names. I don't know why anyone would do this. I have only received the one call so I am not sure if anything can be done, plus I can not do anything on the weekend. We did save the voice message though and have a possible time of call. Any suggestions on what should or can be done? Thanks!
 
harassing question

In my custody agreement it says that both my ex and I are not not bother, threaten, or harrass each other, well my ex is in total violation of that, however his wife is harrassing me also. I recieved a nasty letter a few years ago from her, my attorney has a copy of it and my ex knows that I had seeked legal advice about it. She backed off when I threatened legal action against her but now I am getting harrassing phone calls from her, someone who has no buisness calling my house to begin with IMO, now I know it's not a Violation of order on her cause it only lists my ex and myself, I would like to get that changed so that included immediate family members (although no one else bothers me), can I file a complaint against her with the cops, she also said something that can be considered a threat, but will they do anything since they are in SC and I am in FL? Would this be a federal issue cause of us being in different states and all? Thanks, oh and I am looking into blocking her number.

Finally in response to the first person who posted here, you may want to call the phone company and see if they have the privacy feature which forces those whose number does not show up to say who they are, I did that a few years ago and it really cut back on telemarketers!!

If the number shows up you may be able to block the call. It cost money to do this; ask your phone company. If the number doesn't show up then the advise about asking the phone company to trace it, with documented times and dates would be your next best bet.
