Deportation, Re-entry H2B extended H2B issues

I'm a South African citizen currently in USA working on an H2B visa that has been extended. An extended H2B visa. This extended visa is valid from October 2014 til 31 May 2015. I'd like to know if I am allowed to apply for a tourist visa to visit a friend for two weeks in April 2015 (and is it legal- would there be any issues that would prevent me from getting a tourist visa?) and then return to USA til the extended visa runs til it's end (as I'd still be working- just have been on leave/holiday). Can I even travel on an extended H2B visa? As on the extended visa- it does not stipulate whether it is a single or multiple entry visa. Thank you
