I am currently on H1B visa. My employer brought me to US by
saying he would give me a job here. But after coming here he
said that I have to find the job by myself, and he will help me
in finding one. I trusted him and thought I would get a project.
But I'm without a project for the past several months, and my
employer refuses to give one. Also he does not pay me any salary.
I am surviving with the help of my friends here. What can I do in
such a situation? Is he liable to pay me my salary during this
period of my stay here? He actually promised me a job here, but
didn't give it. So how can I get justice in such a situation?
Isn't this actually a form of cheating? Please advise.

This typically is the case with many of so called "consultancy" firms. Your employer by law is obligated to pay you. You can report your employer to USCIS; and possibly seek compensation for the period unpaid.

There is a good chance that you'll be asked to leave the country.. but I would expect it'll be in good faith and shouldn't affect your return to US next time (ofcourse with a valid visa).
