Giving Notice to End Lease

Our lease says that either party can terminate it with 30 days written notice. Our landlord emailed us and gave us 90 days notice. Do we still have to give 30 days when we find a new place?

If it makes a difference, we live in the Bay Area in California.

I've done a lot of research but can't find help on this issue.

Thanks.

If your landlord gave you 90 days notice then you have 90 days from the date of the notice. He could have given you only 30. It would seem that you will have a full 90 days and the landlord will not likely terminate earlier between the 30 days from the date of the notice and the 90th day.

In some jurisdictions the notice must come at the beginning of the period so if you gave notice on the 5th day of a 30 day month, then the earliest that the tenant would have to leave is at the end of the following month, or 55 days later (25 days remaining on month 1 and 30 days during month 2). Neither is a concern here as you received 90 days notice.
