My friend was convicted for transporting leass than 5 grams of cocaine in 1992. He served a number of years in prison, then was to finish his sentence on probation. Since that time, the sentencing guidelines have been greatly reduced. It would appear to me, alyman, that he may already have served more than enough time to satisfy current sentencing requirements.

What is the best way to go about asking the Department of Corrections to end his probation? He was doing fine until he was caught dring a pickup truck an a suspended license last year. He stopped driving that truck as well.

Another question would be regarding probation officers; who holds them accountable? They seem to have unlimited power over the probationees that report to them. What are the checks and balances? How can a probationee get transferred to a different P.O.?

If you're sentenced to prison and subsequently released, you're on parole, not probation.

That is a horse of a different color. They only thing parole has in common with probation is it begins with the same letter of the alphabet.

Parole is time determinative. It has an end. He should be reporting to a parole officer on a regular basis. If he isn't, he's in very big trouble. He could find himself back in prison.

The DOC has published everything about his parole. He has been given a letter. If he doesn't have that, he's lying to you about the terms of his parole. In fact, he could already be in violation.

The parole documents specify every aspect of his release. It has a specified end date. It lays out his conditions of parole and all the rules he's required to obey.

Check with the DOC. He may be wanted. He might have been violated.
