Our local martial arts school in CA has 3 children who are US National Championships, and will be traveling to Turkey to represent the USA. We wish to solicit local businesses to offset costs (estimated at $5000-$10,000), but who would the checks be made out to?
We could have the checks made out to the school itself, but it's not tax except - would their be tax consequences? Plus, there might be political consequences and not all parents may want to support this activity.
We could have the checks made out to a parent or child, but there certainly would be tax consequences, plus it's not very believable asking a business to make out a check to an individual.
We could try to set up a non-profit organization for this one fund raiser, but that's a lot of work and takes time.
With the ability to accept checks, we would be limited to cash fund raising events only. Any suggestions on how we could accept larger ($500 or so) checks in the best fashion?
