Friend wrecks my car, won't compensate?

Had a friend drive me in my car home from the bar, hits another vehicle and totals my car. In NC the insurance follows the car not the driver, so while my friend got a DUI, I got saddled with my insurance claim, the other cars claim as well as the injuries associated with the other victims. All the damages went on my insurance. My friend who was the driver is not going to compensate me for any of this. He was BAC was twice the legal limit, neither of us remember why he was driving and why we didn't take a cab, but regardless Im out my deductable ($500) plus however much my insurance goes up over the next three years. Do I have any recourse from getting any of this back from either him or his insurance, since again he was the driver.
