Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft fine for shoplifting under $50 in Texas (no police)?

I got caught shoplifting $8 worth of food from Store name by undercover security. They took me to a back room and got my info (address, driver's license, social security number, etc) They told me that since this was my first offense they would not be calling the police and they would only be filing an "outside complaint". They also said it would not show up on my record. But they did tell me to expect a fine in the mail in the next few weeks. I asked them how much it would be and they said probably about $50, but I have a bad feeling its going to be alot more than that. I feel terrible about what I did and just want to pay my fine and be done with it- but I'd like to know how much it will cost in advance so I can start saving money from work (I don't make very much). How much do you think it will cost? And when can I be expecting it in the mail?

Where we cannot say for certain the $50.00 figure seems the most likely. The fines usually start at $50.00 and go up in accordance to state guidlines. The amount is based mostly on value of what was stolen So again the $50.00 figure seems correct

Thanks for answering! I hope the fine will only be $50, although I have this bad feeling its going to be $200 or something. I was also wondering when to expect the fine in the mail? Does it typically take 2 weeks? a month? And what are the chances the store will sue me over this? They made me sign a piece of paper that says the store has the right to sue if they choose to, but does this happen very often?

No one can predict what the fine will be. Most companies have a sliding scale based on the value of the merchandise. I know some companies take the value of the merchandise and add $200. Others double the value of the merchandise charging the state minimum for items less up to the state maximum. If the items were damaged they charge triple the amount of the merchandise. It all depends on the retailer and their scale.

You were caught during an extremely busy time for retailers and law firms. The store you got caught at probably catches a fair number of shoplifters. The LP has to process your paperwork instore and complete a case file usually within 48 hours of your detention. Then the boss has to look at the file and send it to Corporate. They review the file and if it is eligible for further action, they forward it to a law firm for collection. The law firm reviews it for accuracy and correct street addresses and then sends out letters etc. Keep in mind that with weekends and holidays, this slows the process down. I would say 2-4 weeks is a safe bet assuming you gave them the correct street address (1234 South Main Street - not 1234 South Main Road) etc

It is something that can happen. The companies want this money. Look at the current economic situation. They are entitled to this money and you have no defense for not paying it, this is an easy case, so why not sue you? Then you would pay the fine, plus court costs and their lawyer fees.

If you cannot pay the full amount, work with the company. They will set up payment plans which allow you to pay off this fine, but still have money to live on. They key is, pay this, move on and steal no more. Do not ignore this fine because it will have further reaching consequences than sucking up and paying it.
