Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft embezzlement - theft

I owe a former employer $20K. I have been told by them that if I don't pay it back immediately they will put a lein against my house. The house is in my husbands name only. Can they do this? I have not been arrested, and no formal charges have been made.
