I recently had to vacate an apartment prior to the end of the one-year lease (because I left school). When I left, I went to the apartment business office announcing my intention to vacate immediately, gave the manager a letter to that effect and had her sign it. When I left, the rent was current and I did not ask for my deposit (same as one month's rent) back.
Less than 30 days after I left, they sent a bill for three months rent, $100 re-keying fee and $200 re-leasing fee.
Please discuss what they have the right to do, including maximum amount of rent they may be due in the State of Missouri, put debt into collections, file suit, report to credit bureau, etc.
