collection agency woes

I just checked my credit report and found a delinquent account that a collection agency had reported. My credit report stated the account was opened in 2006 and was a hospital bill for 3,000.00. I called them and found out it was a hospital bill that my exwife had incurred in 2003. They only took over the account in 2006. The debt did occur 3 months before our legal seperation and she was suppose to pay it in our divorce settlement but obviously did not. The collection agency then dinged my credit with this bill and I was not aware it was outstanding. My question is the debt is from 2003 and I feel it is not worth paying it off since the effect on my credit is slight. The collection agency has been pretty persistant now that they have my phone number. Could they take me to court for the amount or should I ignore their calls.

Should you ignore their calls? Well, if you really feel it's not worth paying off, then at least have the stones to answer the phone and tell them to shove it. (Personally, I wouldn't ignore their call OR tell them to shove it.)

Yes, they can take you to court.

Them taking you to court and you ignoring their calls is not an either/or proposition. Both can happen.

Where's your ex? She's the one who's supposed to pay this.
