I just need a clarification on immigration law. My wife is a US citizen. Her ex-husband is German. Their child is... German. If the roles had been reversed, wouldn't the child have been US? She had to get a permenent visa for both of them to come live here. Now that they are divorced, what can be done to make the child a US citizen - or can he hold joint citizenship?

Apparently the child is a German - Only! I thought that he would at least have a dual-citiznship status. But here is the catch. The mother, although a US citizen, did not live in the US prior to giving birth except for a short time as an infant. Therefore she can not pass on her citizenship to the child by birth. If anyone else has any further insight, I would appreciate hearing it.
