ok I was caught shoplifting at a department store the item was about $30. I have a summons to appear in court in a week and I have no idea what to do? THis is my first offense and I have a squeky clean record. I dont know what I was thinking but I am worried about having this on my permanent record I am a college student that will be graduating in May and I know this will probably appear on my background check. And also I would want to know how much in fines i would probably pay for $30. I hope they are not going to give me some outrageous fine. Can you tell me what to do?
If you cannot afford an Attorney then yes request a public defender. However that should not stop you from setting up some free consultations with other Attorneys
and i also i heard a court appointed lawyer can get you into the deversion program and get your case dismissed just like a lawyer that you hire or your own. I dont have much money so court appointed might be the way i will have to go
Both are Lawyers some good some not. What admin was trying to get you to do was get free consulations so you can ask questions and have some idea of what you want and how to get it. Your Public defender is not likely going to spend much time with you so its best to get as much info as you can
