Car ownership

My ex and I are both on my car as signer and cosigner. He has taken the car and had it for two months now. I have been without a car for the whole two months, and the police have told me that I can legally go take the car back. Problem is, it is on his property and he has probably disabled it so I can't drive it if I were to go get it. Would I get into trouble for trespassing if I was getting my own property off his? I need to know what my rights are as far as getting the car. And if I don't go get the car, can I sue him for the money I put down and into the car since he won't give it back or have my name taken off?
