I know they can collect dues owed after you file but can they collect the dues accrued before the filing? I've read in other states the past dues are just like any other debt and can be discharged but I'm not sure in my state.

    Thank you.

This applies in your state of Alabama:
A bankruptcy court ruling will not free you from your future financial obligations to your homeowner's association, but you may be able to include your delinquent dues as part of your bankruptcy. You may list past-due fees and penalties unpaid at the time you file for bankruptcy -- but any HOA fees that come due after you file will remain your responsibility.
