Can a 17 Year old get a restraining order againts their parent?

My friend has been having serious situations with his dad since he was born. I'm not allowed to say what kind of siruations, but they're pretty seriuos. He is 17 now and has thought of getting emancipated, but its not working out. He doesn't want to live with his dad anymore and his dad wants him around forever.

Is it possible for him to get restraining order againts him and not have to live with him anymore?

Or can he just run away and never look back?

Please help. I'll appreciate ideas of any kind. He really needs to get out of there.
