Boyfriend was living with me for 8 months with nothing in writing. I own the home. He moved out abruptly with no notice a month ago leaving all belongings. What are my rights in NY state? He has not contacted me.

Do you have a mutual friend or is there a relative who can come & get his belongings?

Initially you're required to protect them. He can request them, but I thnk the required time to retain them in NY has elapsed.

Some believe you should legally evict a peron lie ths under abandonment.
That is the safest way. Besides, after 8 months, no hurry is there. I recommend you file for eviction against him, make it all legal and pretty.

Others believe you can take a legal short cut or two.

Either way, a formal eviction under abandonment will kill two birds with one stone.

Your call, madam.

He moved out 1 mo. ago - lived with her for 8 mos.

I don't think I would do anything with his belongings except "maybe" give them to a friend/family member (only been gone 1 mo.) without first doing a formal eviction. (my opinion)

I don't understand how people get in these situations.

There is a two letter MAGIC word that is great to use in 99% of life's situations.

The word is NO.

Just say NO.

NO rarely hurts you, gets you in a jam, or costs you MONEY!

Life is so simple if you learn and use the magic word, NO.

Some of the situations people get into certainly are hard to understand. :(
