what is the law in North Carolina about having open beers in your car/trunk? or being intoxicated as a passenger underage?

Not sure what you are asking -- liability as a driver for underage drinkers in your car or liability for being an underage drinker?

It would seem that Chapter 20 Article 1 of the N. Carolina General Assembly would prohibit drinking or having an open bottle/beverage of alcohol in the passenger area. I have seen references to this section as the N. Carolina Safe Roads Act.

Never have an open bottle of beer in your car. Doesn't matter whether you are driving or not. I think it would give the police reasonable cause to suspect a possible violation of law.
