Bad situation

I foolishly allowed a friend of mine to take over payments on a vehicle of mine and now he has quit paying for it and has moved out of town so what can I do legally to try and find him to retrieve my vehicle

Are you saying this was not an official sale but you gave the vehicle to your friend & he was to make "your" payments when due? Are you also saying you or no one else you know has any idea where your friend is - you can't find him?

It sounds to me like a sale agreement was made but they did not pay off the loan.

Was anything you agreed to do (or have done) in writing?
Do you believe he stole the car?
Is the car titled and/or registered in your name?
No need to answer, because when someone absconds with your stuff its said to stolen. Who ya gonna call?
