We lived in a rental house in Connecticut with a one year lease from October 1 2007 till September 30 2008 . On the front of the lease it states that the lease terminates on September 30 2008. But later in the lease it states that it automatically renews for one year. We gave our landlord thirty days on January 1 2014 and moved out on the 31 of that month. Now the landlord says we are in contract still till September 30 2014. Is this automatic renewal good for 6 years?? We have never signed any documents since October 2007. Are we on the hook to this guy?

Review that lease again. It may state that it continues to renew EACH year at the deadline of the original lease (September 30th) UNLESS written documentation is provided 30 days prior to that date. This is not unusual.

There is no statute of limitation on how long it can keep renewing? 6 years and our original lease is still good with no other documentation being signed? All the lease says it will renew for one year. It does not say it will keep renewing every year after year....

Then your argument to the landlord (and to the court should it come to that) is exactly that; that the automatic renewal was for just one year and at the time you provided your 30 day written notice your lease was now a month to month tenancy.
