Accused of hacking a server

Well where to begin:

I play a game on the internet known as Freelancer. Occasionaly new modifications come out for this game and I like to try them out. I was on this server called "A1Freelancers" and minding my own business when i get banned. Fine not a problem, getting by the ban is not a problem at all, I can simply create a new Windows XP account and join the server again under a new character ID, as I did not appreciate getting banned without a reason i began to edit files on the "client side" (basically the files on my machine which pertain to the game) to give myself an edge in the game, well the "server police" did not take too kindly to this and began to email the administrator of the game that i was back and to ban me again. I was banned repeatedly but just kept coming back. Apparently the whole time i kept coming back and gettin banned somoene had hacked their server and taken control of it, i was then accused of hacking there server because of my ability to keep coming back after a ban. another player confronted me on the server and asked me if i had hacked the server, tryin to look cool i said "yes, with some help". this person then took a screenshot of this and submitted it to the administrator of the server. all i was doing was trying to look cool and get a little fanfare, i know your probably thinking dumb move, as i see that now. but in the end I did not hack the server. i then posted a comment on the server forum and did not like how it turned out, so i deleted it, i was then accused of hacking their website which hosts the forum, but as u may or may not know anyone who posts a comment on a forum has the ability to delete it after. Basically what my point is the adminsitrator called the FBI and spoke to an agent Karl Haws and told the agent that I had hacked his server. The FBI did not care that i hacked their gaming server but was interested in the talent behind the hack because of all the routing the hacker did to do it. The administrator apparently emailed the FBI agent logs which traced the hacker and gave him all my personal information from the forum, ie my name. I have seen these logs as the admin of the forum posted them there and no where did i see my ip. i dont know if this will help me, but i am still a little stressed. I live in Canada and i have pleaded with the administrator that it was not me who hacked his server and i explained the extent of what i did to him in continuous emails that contine even as i write this. Now i know i did not hack the server but what kind of hastle can i expect from all of this. I am in the military here in canada and have a wife and 2 kids so u can see y i dont want this to go any farther than it has, but the ball has already started to roll in the FBI and agent Karl Haws has my name now and that is distressing enough.I verified the number the administrator gave me of the FBI agent and have concluded that he is not lying. I have not called Agent Haws yet but if I do, i do not know what to say or where to begin as this all started over a silly video game!
If anyone can help me with some advise or what i should say to the FBI it would be greatly appreciated.
I hope what i have wrote gives all the information that u may need to come to a reply. if not just psot and i will try to be more precise as to waht u may need to know
 
Well, are you on static IP or dynamic IP? And when you enter the game, do you have usernames on your players? Erm, to be honest with you man, a picture can be edited. Those do not provide any proof what so ever... I've been through almost what you're going through. But not the hacking part. And their server should have a log somewhere of when the person hacked their server, unless he removed it. But if you're on static IP, and the IP does not match yours, then you're safe. But then you can be claimed to have been using an IP changer of some sort. Or if you are on a dynamic IP and IP that was used to hack their server was static, then you're safe. Hackers pretty much use static IP's from what I've been around.

Just ignore them, man. As I said, they do not have enough proof to convict you of anything. If anything does happen, just explain the entire situation and be honest.
 
Yes...my ip is static, also now he is blaming me for makin statements about him on other forums, whcih is completely untrue...its getting to the point now where anything bad happens to him, i seem to be the culprit. This guy jsut seems to have it in for me, and its gonna blow way outa proportion.
 
LOL. Just ignore him man. By the way he is talking, he seems to be an attention seeker now. But if you've not be picked up or contacted by the FBI or any law official by now, then you have nothing to worry about. :)
 
Yesh, I'd have to say, if they were interested in you, you should know it by now....

Static ip's can be traced to isp's, they can look over records... It's all in the numbers..... I think if ya hacked the server, not using proxies, and anyone cared, there would be more problems already than a guy talkin' poo to ya online... :)

If you didn't hack it, don't worry about it. Circumstantial <spelling> evidence should be hard to come about using computers, unless you are very good at destroying things, all things your computer has seen, they will see.. :) No hard evidence, no case I would think...

There are always two sides to every story.
The gentleman who started this thread has not been completely candid here. He and two friends locked up our server and took full control of it for several hours.

And yes we do have the logs.

As for the abilites of the FBI, the new Homland Security Act has loosened the restraints a bit.

He may not be out of the woods yet.

And he must be guilty of something or he would not have bothered to post in this forum.
 
See what i mean, this guy just wont leave me alone, seems to think i have all this talent, and as far as i am concerned i think i have been completely candid, if u could please fill us in as to what i have not already mentioned, then feel free to do so, and u know dman well u dont have my ip and if u wanted it that bad u could get it!! Now please leave me alone, and stop spreading lies about me! i left ur server and u alone!
 
You failed to mention how much trouble I had to go to get you to leave our server. And you really have not left because you still post on our forums. I have given up trying to ban you from our forums and our server because you simply register again under slightly different names using different IP addresses and you just will not quit.

You were banned because of your behavior, and by your own admission above, you continued to come back time after time.

An adult would have taken the hint and gone elsewhere, as I advised you to do many times.

You filled my PM box with mail daily for about 2 weeks and I did everything a reasonable person can do to ask you politely to leave our server and to leave me alone. Yet you persisted daily. You seemed determined to force yourself upon us.

When your more elder friend, the individual who manages the server you were an admin on (until he found out about your behavior), contacted me to ask about the FBI situation, I told him that it was out of my hands. I also told him to give you a message for me.

I told him that I simply wanted you to leave me in peace. I wanted you and your two friends to stay off our server and to stay out of our forums. That was my only request. How can it harm you to grant me that request and why would you not want to?

I advised , whom you seem to respect, to advise you that I have two very dangerous assets, Time and Money, both to burn.

I tried ignoring you but that did not work. You still persist.

You did not get the message and you pushed one time too many.

Now my attorney and his private investigators love you quite a lot and they wish to thank you for your behavior. They are profiting by it quite handsomely at little loss to me.

Who do you think advised me of this obscure post?

As for the FBI, once one calls on them, one does not call them off.

You have received some advice from these kind gentlemen above but you need to ask yourself what they really know, what they don't know, and what they would simply like you and themselves to believe that they know.

You also need to ask yourself what I am willing to do with my money to get what I want. Surely by now you must realize that, since you finally crossed the line, I am quite serious about using the legal system and the criminal justice system against you. You should have listened to my repeated warnings and those of your friend. Now it is too late.

We all have personality faults. One of mine is vindictiveness. Fortunately for you, I will keep my efforts entirely within the law. But I assure you that what can be done to you within the law will be quite enough.

This is so stupid, I left u alone and now u are chasing me down in this forum. I was told by otto what u had said and it left me to belive that u were leaving it alone, now u are starting this whole thing up again and i dont know y. I left a kind respectful post on ur "poll" and u thanked me for it and that it was sincere, so please tell me y u are bothering me again. I started this thread when this whole thing started with me and u and look at the date to see. So u seeing this forum now actin like i am startin up all over again is all messed up man. i have uninstalled ur mod and feel free to lock me out of ur forums. And despite what u think i did not leave 2 wks of PM's in ur box, it was like 2 nights and we both were coming to some sort of agreement then all of a sudden u wake up and decide to be an evil little man again. so it is u that is persuing me and u posting in this forum is proof enuf of that.
SO PLEASE FOR THE LAST TIME LEAVE ME ALONE!!!

Sometimes I wish I were more internet savvy, not for the intent of hacking but to trach down the accual addresses of those nasty perv porn emails I get. Plus Ive just been recieving a host of "this file is a pic of you naked" or "the document you requested" files. I know they are viruses and i report them to Spam cop but Id like to burn those A$$holes myself... kinda like you know how to do.... jealous
 
Guys, there is no need to continue this conversation here.

The bottom line is I wonder why you think it is fine to keep hacking your files to get an edge in the game. It's obvious they don't want you or anyone else to and you are breaking their rules by doing so. I'm not accusing anyone of actions subsequent but they want to create a game that is fair for everyone. It would seem that they do have a right to protect their system to ensure everyone has the freedom to play equally.

I found this post purely by accident and was actually looking for something completely different!

I was so pissed about what I read that I had to join the site and post my own view.

ArmyCpl. Your problems arise because you can't shut your mouth. Your being in the Army is irrelevant and you telling people that you are can only bring the establishment into disrepute.

I suggest you now STFU and never try to visit their site again or enter into any correspondence with them EVER.

What sort of claptrap is this? Man you need to wake up. This guy will not be conviceted of anything. In fact the authorities are not interested in game servers and will not even follow this any further as they have 'real' work to do.....not assist some little upstart fulfil his vindictive little wet dream.

Oh, and P.S. I would suggest making a threat, then withdrawing it by saying you will work within the law, does not actually withdraw the threat at all!

I know very little about the law, but I know computers. When you run a server, open an email account, connect a computer to the internet, and run a website you have to live with the consequences. As with almost everything online, there are strings attached. By running a server you take the chance that someone will try to hack you. When you open an email account you take the chance of having it mass emailed. When you connect a computer to the internet you take the chance of getting a virus or getting hacked. When you run a website you need to take the chance that someone will post inappropriate or illegal things. Most of these things are against the law, but the technology to prove the crime is not available. You can use a proxy serve to connect to the site, a spoofed IP, or a public computer. When you use or run any of these things you take responsibility for your security. If you've never even heard of a firewall and someone hacks you, it's your fault. It is also a generally good practice to back everything up regularly, so that if shit happens, W/E, you still have your all important data. Because in reality there's no way to prove that someone hacked you, unless they did it by accident. As I said earlier IP's change, unless you make a big enough case for their ISP to get involved nothing will come from it. Additionally someone could be spoofing your IP, pretending to be you, it can be very difficult to tell the difference between spoofing and a real connection if the packets are well crafted.
In closing, if you are willing to hack someone, you should be willing to accept the consequences. If you are running a large gaming server, you have a lot more things to worry about than reporting one incident. You should be more concerned with upgrading or patching the server so that nothing like that will ever happen again. Because I promise you, for everyone hacker you catch attempting to hack you, there are at least 5 more thinking about trying the same thing, and next time the might have a lot more bandwidth, ram, and processing power to put into the attack.
