Accidental Death of a Dog

A friend of mine hit my 2 year old dog on the head causing him brain damage and I had to put him to sleep.

Am I liable to tell animal control of the situation? What could happen to my friend and what can happen to me? Help please

You don't HAVE to tell anyone what happened... but if you do then your friend might potentially face a cruelty to animals charge depending on the circumstances... and you could sue your friend for civil damages over the loss of the dog.
If this is a good friend and you don't want any of that to happen then just keep quiet.

I say this as a dog lover (and cats, a hamster, etc).

The civil suit would be limited to the value of the dog as property... not as a companion.
