abandoned boat

My neighbor recently purchased property. there is a boat on the property that has not been registered since 2005. a state police check of the registration numbers revealed no owner on record. the previous owner of the property didn't know anything about the boat. my neighbor has told me I can remove the boat. what steps do I need to take to do this legally?

Check with the registration officials in your state.
Removing the boat probably won't be a problem.
Getting it registered might be difficult and/or expensive.
Before you take it off his hands, see if you can legally license it.
