Gun possession in Chicago and transportation

I recently obtained a license to own a gun in Wyoming. Due to work opportunities, I am going to be moving here to Chicago. I will still own my home in Wyoming. I heard that there is something like reciprocity that exists as someone I know has a license from another state, Virginia maybe. I don't understand why it wouldn't be consistent. I'm unsure whether I can keep a gun in my home. Assuming I can, how could I transport it if I can possess a gun but not have a carry license?

Beginning January 1, 2023, upon a Firearms Transaction Inquiry Program (FTIP) approval, the Illinois State Police (ISP) will automatically renew a person's Firearm Owner's Identification Card (FOID) for individuals who have submitted a full set of fingerprints to ISP specifically for their FOID card or Concealed Carry License. The individual's FOID card will remain active for a period of 10 years from the date of the FTIP approval so long as the card holder is not subject to revocation or suspension under the Firearm Owner's Identification Card ActOpens in new window. As FOID cards are replaced, new cards will not include the issuance or expiration dates pursuant to FOID Act updates that took effect January 1, 2022. Individuals who apply for a FOID card may include a full set of their fingerprints transmitted through a live scan fingerprint vendor licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR), which will be kept on file for potential automatic renewals. You'd better google everything you can find about Illinois and Chicago gun laws, especially Chicago, before you step foot into that state with a gun.

Chicago and NYC are the two most rabid anti-gun cities in the US.

You might as well leave your gun with a relative or sell it.

As was mentioned above, Chicago is like New York City in having extremely strict gun laws. Here in NYC it is recommended to call the NYC hotline which answers all types of questions, and they have a specific telephone number for guns. I'm assuming they have the same for Chicago.


But you're looking for Chicago, Illinois, so I did a similar lookup around what @army judge mentioned about a FOID card and found an official link to an Illinois Government Transporting Your Firearm brochure with a contact number. It all essentally points to the same information - and make sure you've followed all the rules. As you probably know, they are very serious about guns in these two states.

WHERE CAN I OBTAIN A FOID APPLICATION? On March 16, 2015, the FOID application transitioned to an on-line process. Therefore, the Illinois State Police no longer accepts preprinted applications. The FOID application can be completed on the Department's website, at www.ispfsb.com. Paper applications, which may be obtained by contacting the Firearms Services Bureau Call Center at (217) 782-7980, will only be accepted from applicants with appropriate proof they are unable to apply either on the internet or at a customer service kiosk due to religion or a disability.
