Computer Crimes, Hacking Became paranoid a guy who threatened me last year online...

I was asking if I'm fucked in this situation, or if there's any chance I could be exonerated. Because I'm pessimistic about law enforcement doing anything but looking for a way to convict someone.

To be honest, police officers don't clear anyone, they simply charge someone or refer it to the DA.

If you do get charged, you'll have a defense attorney to protect your rights, and make sure you receive a fair trial.

It ain't over, bub, because it hasn't started.

You're as free as everyone else, to live your life anyway you choose and obey their laws.

To be honest, police officers don't clear anyone, they simply charge someone or refer it to the DA.

OK, but if someone plants something illegal on your computer, how likely is the computer forensics person to know it was planted and alert law enforcement to this?

That's what I mean. Because the sense I get is they just look at it inductively, and if they find something, they just report it was found and the DA tries to nail you for it. And I get the sense district attorneys do not care about sending innocent people to prison; they only want convictions because it looks good for their record.

Also, how would police likely respond to an anonymous tip on something like that? Would they be more likely to get a search warrant to look in a person's residence first, and if it's not there, then check the dumpsters, or would they start with the dumpsters if the person alerting them speculated the person was getting rid of it?

I'll play your game.In the incredibly unlikely chance that your entire nightmare scenario is true; that something illegal was placed on your computer and that the cops now have it (and I continue to maintain that we are talking in billionths of percentage points here), it's STILL not a given that you will be convicted, or jailed. Because your attorney will not have any trouble whatsoever creating a reasonable doubt. ANYONE could have placed ANYTHING on that computer by taking it out of the trash, placing their whatevers on it, putting it back in the trash and THEN calling the cops to say that the computer is there. That's so easy a win for your attorney that the odds that the DA would charge you are even lower than the odds that your delusion is reality in the first place.
 
I'm curious what you think was planted on your computer? Child pornography? Evidence of a murder you committed? What are you hiding that makes you so paranoid? They do love to rape child molesters in prisons.

That's not reasonable doubt. Forensics will determine I last logged on a mere day or two before the computer was picked up by police.

If it were that easy, nobody would ever be convicted of computer crimes.

I'm done here. You reject all attempts to help you; you've already made up your mind that your life is over. "This guy" is all powerful, can make all of law enforcement stoop to his bidding, and all of law enforcement is involved in a conspiracy to bring you down and convict you because you're just that important to them.

I don't know what your credentials are, but I can say that if I were a juror, and the only defense provided to me was, "the suspect's computer was in the garbage for a day or two before police picked it up," I would vote to convict.

That's what the "reasonable" part of "reasonable doubt" means. It's not reasonable to believe some random person came along and found a computer in the dumpster, put something illegal on it, and then put it back in the dumpster, and contacted authorities.

You'll never convince a jury of that, and a DA would never think you could convince a jury of that.

And before this incident, I would never have thought to even question who the informant was/if he may have had ulterior motives.

And it's not reasonable to believe some random dude you got into a fight with on Reddit went to all the trouble of planting some incriminating evidence on your computer for revenge. You must be worried about something else, I think.

Did you miss the part about the various cryptic threats he made and the fact that he DID hack me and changed my VPN password?

You're basically confirming for me that if what I'm saying is true, there's no way I'm going to be exonerated. I mean, you don't even believe that a guy I got in a fight with on Reddit would hack me.

Your fears make you appear like you have something to hide that maybe this guy found out. Listen to yourself. I think there's more to this story than what you've said thus far. You're waaaaay too worried about this.
