it's possible that I was caught shoplifting. no police were called, but an employee snapped a picture of my license plate.
it wasnt anything extravagant (maybe $25 worth of product) but it's not the first time I've stolen from the store. it is however the first time I have been followed, or come this close to getting caught red handed. and I've never been caught before.
what should I expect now, and is there anything I can do to get ahead of this?

If contacted by Police answer NO QUESTIONS!!! Use your right to remain silent. If you have done this before and they are aware this could get dicey so again say NOTHING!!!

How do you know that? What possible purpose would this person have for doing this other than because of a suspicion of shoplifting?

Not according to your story, but you might eventually hear from the police or the state's attorney or the victim of your crime spree.

is there anything I can do to get ahead of this?

Sounds like you should be contacting a therapist about treatment for your apparently compulsive criminal behavior. Also, confessing to crimes on a public internet message board is a phenomenally dumb thing to do.

clearly aware of my mistakes, but thank you for chiming in with all of your super helpful remarks. I was simply looking for information on what I should expect to happen now so I can plan accordingly.

Say it ain't so, Joe.

On it's face a picture means very little.

The picture snapper could have Photoshopped it, mate.

This is why perps should use their RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT.

Danger Will Robbingson, DANGER!!!!!

The picture may do little good depending on what evidence (if any) they have of the theft or prior ones. I am a Retail theft consultant and answer questions like yours daily. You do nothing at this point and you do NOT return to store at ALL! If contacted exercise your right to remain silent! Do not bow to pressure to answer even the simplest question. Its a trap

Just as you felt the need to dissect him and his question, I too feel the need to with your reply. I gather you don't put much thought into things and how you communicate with people. With that, I would LOVE to know your qualifications are? School? Career? Experience? Just curious. The first remark you had, well questions, were already answered by him. You couldn't possible be serious when you asked them? So in case that was just your slick way of implying that the woman taking the photo was there bc he's a "thief" was irrelevant bc he is aware of that. Next remark, in regards to hearing from the "victim of your crime spree", again irrelevant bc it's baseless. What crime spree? You throw out words as if you know the meaning and/or what your talking about. Which brings me to the next irrelevant remark due to, once again, a response that wasn't even asked of. Your giving advice like anyone would want it. You tell him to contact a therapist for his apparent compulsive criminal behavior? You sound like an angry person who likes to focus on other people bc you don't like to look in the mirror. Your throwing low blows, and yes on a public internet forum, to someone you know NOTHING about besides the fact that he made a mistake and learned a lesson. Honestly, say he did get charged, highly unlikely bc contrary to your belief, a post made by someone by the name of anonadria38 on a public internet site means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. I must say, I'm taken back by the fact that you think that it would but like I already stated I no nothing about you so maybe your young or other circumstances? But let's just say for a sake of enlightenment, they get arrested and charged bc this store happens to prosecute, waste their time, energy and money over a item not even worth $25. First of all, it wouldn't be a criminal charge, they stated they have never been charged with this, it's a summary offense. Not sure on their state, but many states offer ARD for first time, non violent offenders. That means they are basically on probation for a short time and once completed they arent charged with anything. You seem to enjoy kicking people while they're down as a way to deflect and yes I know that for a fact bc hurt people hurt people. People may say that im doing the same to you, I'm not. I immedialty knee how un-selfaware you are. That is evident, at least to me bc I do this for a living. So I'm simply trying to bring this to your attention bc, although I don't know you, I know where you've been and I know of the solution. I can say from a professional standpoint that anonadria38 surely doesn't need to contact a therapist over the fact that they are very well aware what they have done was wrong, plus demonstrating the concern over their actions instead of completing avoiding and continuing on with this SPREE

You obviously aren't mature enough to realize that this smart mouth is a criminal in the making. I'm sure a lawyer, a retired sheriff, a loss prevention manager and who else knows what are much more intelligent to see there is a pattern this OP is doing by REPEATEDLY stealing. Even little old me can read that. Get off your high horse!

You may be right, they may be a criminal in the making. I am beyond your maturity level though bc with that comes not passing judgement on others esp not knowing the facts, being good and at peace with myself bc when you are you don't have a negative outlook on life, etc. You and I obviously live in two different worlds bc I see the good in people and that honestly has been to a fault at times but I can assure you that im not on a high horse. Tens years ago, possibly, but I learned first hand the effects on one's mental health when it goes untreated. I've been down, I could've ended up in jail but likely I got back on track. I take it as a lesson to never judge, put someone down or even give my 2 cents on a matter I know nothing about bc life has a funny way of educating you.

Innocent until proven guilty.
There are various ways this petty offense can be escaped without a criminal conviction, especially with a clear history.
Odds are in his favor to get another shot at preserving his good name.

Well...As OP is a self-admitted thief, it would just be the illusion of a good name. ;)

First off stop breaking the law. Ok...that's it. Just stop breaking the law.

Forgive me, I'm knew. Just signed on yesterday. Is this a forum for people to ask legal questions or did I happen to be directed to this thread, came up on Google when I did a search, which an OP made a post that is not what this site is about? I'm not being sarcastic, truly don't know. But after getting notification on people's responses, I'm thinking I stupidly just went along with what I thought it was before even checking.
