Recently involved in a shoplifting incident. Was approached and gave merchandise back with no issue. Was about 25-26 dollars. No cops were involved and was first time offense. Just gave drivers license for information. Was told because was first time offense may not be fined but to look out for a letter in mail still. Will I get criminally charged down the road for this? Will paying the civil fine end this incident completely since it's not much money to fight about? Thank you

I am a Retail theft consultant and answer questions like yours daily. No one can answer for certain but the store has NOTHING to gain by filing charges if you pay Civil Demand. failure to pay could provoke that action and other long term consequences

If I pay this civil demand will they still continue to send letters for more money, cause I have heard they may still ask for more. Or will it be a good possibility the incident is settled and forgot about.

You'll just have to wait and see.

Had you worried, fretted, and wondered BEFORE you stole that useless, MADE IN CHINA JUNK, you wouldn't have to be afraid today.

So, wait and see, stop stealing, pay the lousy demand letter, and behave yourself.

I know was foolish and hoping when all paid its over, never attempting this ever again

Once again the store has NOTHING to gain filing a criminal complaint once you pay Civil demand. That does not mean they wont but have nothing to gain. In addition some states do not permit retailers to both seek Civil Demand and file criminal complaint.

Well if paying the civil demand helps them not think about filing further, I'm gonna take the chance and hope they don't afterwards.

If you pay the civil demand, that "most likely" will be the end of it.

No one can say for certain but it should be over once you pay Civil Demand failure to pay could provoke criminal filing

How sure are u of this? Did u have a similar experience. Regardless I appreciate the advice.

No, I have not had a similar experience. I have never stolen anything in my life. We can only tell you that most likely it will be all over if you pay the civil demand. There is no way we can know for sure.
