I'm in a long distance with my fiance who I have been with since February of last year(2004). He lives in California and I live in Toronto. We are now engaged, and have a wedding date set for Sept. 22 of this year (2005).

Does this work the same in reverse? If it's the American marrying the Canadian, does the same permanent residency apply after marriage?
Btw, what exactly is permanent residency? Does it mean they can both live and work in Canada?
