I moved in with my friend and his mom and loved with them for almost 2 years. There were times where I wasn't working and my friend's mom told me she'd cover my portion of the rent free of debt until I got another job. There was a verbal agreement for how much my portion is. Nothing was written down. I wasn't on the lease, the property management company didn't know I lived there. She is now seeking back rent from me almost 4 months later. She kicked me out back in April, the day I paid my portion of the rent.

You didn't ask any questions.

But if you are wondering if she could sue you and win, then yes, she very likely could. You owe your friends mom the rent money. I doubt any judge will believe that she said you didn't have to pay her back.

Sorry, I was in a rush when I wrote it. The main question I have is, what can I do about the situation?

If you still owe for back rent, you should pay it. IMO that is the morally correct thing to do. If you choose to bypass the morally correct thing to do, then wait to be (possibly) served and present your case to the judge .
Until then, live your life happily!

Did you, at some point while you were living there, get another job and resume paying rent? If so, when did that happen. For which specific months did she cover your rent? How much is she seeking from you.

So...that means you moved in sometime in mid-2024, correct?

She is now seeking back rent from me almost 4 months later.

What steps has she taken in this regard.

what can I do about the situation?

There are likely dozens of things you can do.

When your friends mother first did something to "seek[] back rent from" you, did you respond to her by reminding her that she had "told [you] she'd cover [your] portion of the rent free of debt until [you] got another job"? If so, how did she respond? If not, why not?

I did get another job, I lost one of them in April of 2025 and got another one in June that i left in November and immediately got hired at another job that I left in April of 2026 for another job. She covered may and some of June's rent of 2025. I moved into the home August of 2024. She is seeking $3000 from me. I tried to calmly confront her about it and she escalated to getting verbally violent with me and told me to get off of her property
