If your parent dies and the surviving spouse is your stepmom what are your rights to the estate if there's not a will? If there is a will what is the law about it being made public to the family?

If your father died without a will, ALL OF HIS WORLDLY possessions pass to his spouse.

Your stepmother just got all of YOUR father's stuff.

You take NOTHING.

If there was a will, you can petition the probate court (in some cases that's as simple as asking) the probate court to show you the goods.
