Am I responsible for my wife's debts? Does it vary by state?

If the debts were jointly acquired or authorized then you are.

The answer is accurate but I'll explain. If your wife has her own credit card then it is possible that you are not responsible. However, if you have a joint account then you would be equally liable for what she charges.
