One more. I read a story about the Will Smith murder, not the actor. The football player. In this article some lawyer says that the accident that Smith had with his killer isn't relevant. Of course I don't think that this Hayes guy should go free for killing Smith unless he really feared for his life. But isn't anything related to what happened relevant?

It isn't relevant to the killing because whether he did or did not kill Smith is not affected by whether he was in a hit and run. The hit and run did not cause him to kill Smith. Either he did or he didn't, but whether he did or he didn't is not impacted by whether someone bumped into his bumper.
