When to counter-sue in small claims court?

My landlord gave me advanced notice that I am going to be served to appear in small claims court in October. I intend to countersue for the portion of my security deposit I feel she owes me. When/how do I begin the counter-suit process?

When you get the summons for the court hearing, there is information on responding to this with a countersuit of your own. Make sure you respond before the deadline listed on the paperwork.
