I was arrested in 1983 for driving on a suspended licence (for not paying traffic citations) in the state of maryland. After not appearing in court, a bench warrant was issued for me. After paying for all related citations, I called States Attorneys office (Charles County) and was told warrant was invalidated due to its age but that it was still active. I wrote a letter asking if they would close my case, but the judge refused to look at it until I returned to court and paid 500.00 to re-open the case and to set a new trial date. I live over 800 miles from MD. and am currently unable to aquire drivers licence in the state I reside, due to this situation.
This is killing me becouse I have a family to support and Im also in school.
Will they re-arrest me if the case is re-opened? Will I have to go back a second time to appear for the new trial or is it likely this can be taken care of in one trip? What can I do to take care of this in the least time consumming and efficient way possible. Please help me get this monkey off my back!

Surrender and get it over with.

Considering the cost of a trip, you may want to retain an attorney. He probably knows the judge and can get it taken care of for you. Courts do not like it when you ignore them so you really shouldn't complain since you really knew better.

You will have to get the MD DMV to reinstate your right to drive in MD after you get it taken care of with the court. This is a separate fine.
