Verify Lawyer Credentials

I sure need some guidance on how to locate public records in the uk, if that is possible. I also would be interested in any information that would allow me to investigate the credentials of a lawyer that has contacted me regarding a will that I have been named the sole beneficiary. Before I give him any information I would like to be able to be assured this is a valid transaction.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
By the way does anyone have any idea the role/requirements of thye beneficiary ?? What do I have to do. Do I need legal council ?? I have limited access to extra money. I didn't think it was a requirement to have money or a passport to be the recipient of a will & testiment. This is in the excess of 3.5 million us dollars..

I don't know the way it's done in the UK here but if you call the local bar they will either verify on the phone or you can do so online, usually by searching name. If the attorney has a bar number you can asking him for it as well and that may aid in a search.
